Columbia man arrested following gunfire exchange, pursuit, and canine attack

Columbia MO — A Columbia man is arrested after reportedly firing shots at a female and fleeing from police.

The Columbia police say 38-year-old Donald E. Hammers is facing multiple felony charges after he reportedly had a domestic confrontation with a woman where gunfire was exchanged. The incident happened in the 5400 block of Baseline Place around 12 a.m. Saturday. Gun casings were recovered at the scene.

Hammers left the scene but officers spotted him nearby and a pursuit began. Hammers was pulled over and a canine unit was used to subdue him. He was taken to an area hospital and treated for dog bites.

Hammers was arrested for domestic assault in the 1st degree, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action, and felony resisting arrest.
