BOONE COUNTY, Mo.– In a recent press release, the Boone County Sheriff’s Department stated they received several calls today about a phone scam. Boone-County-SD

An impostor identifying himself as Sheriff Dwayne Carey is contacting citizens, stating they have outstanding arrest warrants which can be resolved by providing a debit or credit card number or obtaining a pre-paid money card. This scam is similar to one reported last month where a suspect identifying himself as  a sheriff’s deputy bilked citizens out of several hundred dollars after convincing them they would be arrested on charges of failure to appear for jury duty.

Citizens reported today the impostor told them they had failed to appear for jury duty or had other unspecified legal issues requiring payment over the telephone. As of this time there are no reports of citizens losing any money.

Boone County Sheriff’s Department says they NEVER telephones citizens asking for debit/credit card information or to obtain a pre-paid money card to pay a fine or bond. Citizens who receive such a call should immediately hang up and contact law enforcement at (573) 442-6131.
